what is 'botox'?
Botox takes its name from Botulinum toxin; a protein produced naturally by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Botulinum toxin - sometimes referred to simply as ‘toxin’ - is refined under laboratory conditions to produce a purified form of the protein that can be safely used for treatments.
Botox is a brand name, although the word is sometimes used to refer to any Botulinum toxin.
Is BOTOX A medication?
It is. The generic name is Botulinum toxin type A, and it is a prescription-only drug in the UK. It is subject to the same strict rules for production and use as all other medications, including its use for cosmetic purposes. It should not be provided to or used by an unqualified person.
Unfortunately some counterfeit Botulinum toxin products do circulate in the UK, which are not subject to the same stringent rules for production and quality assurance. If you are unsure, always check your practitioner's credentials and ask to see proof that the products they are using have been obtained from a legitimate pharmaceuticals supplier.
IS BOTULINUM TOXIN SAFE?
Yes. The use of Botulinum toxin has been well established in medical practice for many years, and it is growing in its application across medical specialties. Very tiny quantities of the drug are required for cosmetic treatments. Generally, these doses are far too small to pose a danger to health.
HOW DOES BOTULINUM TOXIN FOR ANTI-WRINKLE TREATMENT WORK?
Over time, tension in the muscles of facial expression result in wrinkles and lines on our faces. Botulinum toxin relaxes these muscles by blocking some of the small nerves that supply them.
By preventing tension in these muscles, anti-wrinkle treatment reduces or eliminates the appearance of wrinkles and lines
HOW QUICKLY DO ANTI-WRINKLE injections WORK?
Anti-wrinkle injections begin taking effect within the first few days after administration, and you may notice some difference after 2-5 days. However, it generally takes between 14 and 30 days for the peak effect of treatment to be seen.
HOW LONG DO ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS LAST?
The protein in botulinum toxin is naturally broken down by the skin, and so treatments are not permanent. Typically, anti-wrinkle injections will last between 3 and 6 months before repeat treatment is required to maintain the optimum effect.
Treatment duration varies due to a number of factors. Your clinician will be able to discuss these with you in more detail during your consultation.
IS THERE ANY DOWNTIME?
Downtime - a period of restricted activity - is not required after anti-wrinkle injections. You can return to your daily activities as soon as you have left our clinic.
However, we do recommend avoiding any activity that may promote skin flushing or excessive sweating for 24 hours. This includes activities such as exercise, hot baths or saunas.
DOES ANTI-WRINKLE TREATMENT WORK FOR DEEPER LINES?
The deeper lines that develop on our faces over time are the result of repeated movements of the underlying facial muscles. The more these muscles are used, the more apparent the lines become.
Anti-wrinkle injections can be used to reduce the appearance of deeper lines, but may not eliminate them altogether. To achieve a smooth appearance in areas where deeper lines are present, an alternative skin treatment may be required.
WILL ANTI-WRINKLE TREATMENT GIVE ME A ‘FROZEN’ FACE?
The ‘frozen face’ look sometimes associated with anti-wrinkle treatment can be the result of over treatment with too much injection, which may temporarily prevent facial muscles moving altogether.
At Aesthetic BTN we have the experience to assess and administer just the right amount of injection to achieve the desired results without over-treating you.
